Rental Car Pickup Checklist: What to Check Before You Drive

Ten minutes at handover can save you a lot of trouble later. Whether you are renting from us or anyone else, go through this checklist before you drive away.

Walk around the car

Look closely at every panel, bumper, mirror and wheel. Point out any scratches, dents or chips and make sure they are noted. Take clear photos and a short video around the car with the time visible, including the windscreen.

Tyres and spare

• Check the tread and look for cuts or bulges on the sidewalls
• Confirm there is a spare wheel, a jack and a wheel spanner, and that you know where they are
• On mountain trips, ask about tyre pressure for loaded driving

Inside the car

• Headlights, indicators, brake lights and horn all work
• Wipers and washer fluid, especially in the monsoon
• Air conditioning, seat belts and door locks
• Photograph the fuel gauge and odometer

Paperwork and contacts

Make sure the vehicle documents are in the car, and save the phone and WhatsApp number to call if anything goes wrong. Confirm the return time, place and fuel level so there are no surprises.

At return

Refuel to the agreed level, remove your belongings, and do the same walk-around with the staff member. Ask for confirmation that the car is returned in good order and when the deposit will be refunded.
