Why Nepal needs to go green
Nepal is one of the most beautiful countries on earth, and one of the most fragile. Its mountains are young and steep, its monsoon is intense, and its forests do quiet, essential work: holding soil on slopes, feeding springs, cooling valleys and giving shelter to wildlife from red pandas in the hills to rhinos in Chitwan.
Travel is a big part of Nepal's economy, and road travel is how most visitors see the country. That brings jobs and income to towns along every highway. It also brings exhaust, dust and pressure on the land. We rent cars for a living, so we think we have a responsibility to give something back to the roads and hills our customers enjoy.
Nepal has already shown what is possible. Community forestry, where local user groups protect and manage their own forests, has helped bring tree cover back to many hillsides that were bare a few decades ago. Our pledge adds to that effort, one journey at a time.
What trees do for Nepal
Cleaner air in the valley
Kathmandu sits in a bowl surrounded by hills, so vehicle exhaust and dust get trapped, especially in the dry winter months. Trees filter particles and help the city breathe.
Hillsides that hold together
Roots bind soil on steep slopes. Where forests are cleared, monsoon rain washes hillsides away, causing the landslides that block highways and threaten villages every year.
Water and farmland
Forested watersheds feed the springs and rivers that villages, farms and hydropower plants depend on. Healthy forest means steadier water through the dry season.
Livelihoods for communities
Nepal's community forests are managed by local user groups. Planting with them supports fodder, firewood, and income for the families who look after the land.
Our pledge: 10 trees for every 1,000 miles
We add up the distance driven across all our rentals. For every 1,000 miles (about 1,600 km), we plant 10 trees. A Kathmandu to Pokhara round trip is roughly 250 miles, so four such trips by our customers means ten new trees in the ground.
We plant native species suited to each area, working with local communities who care for the saplings after planting, because a tree only counts if it survives.
