When you book a rental car in Nepal you may be asked to choose between petrol, diesel and electric. Here is how to decide.
Petrol
The default for small cars and sedans. Easy to refuel almost everywhere, smooth in city traffic, and a good all-round choice for Kathmandu and highway trips.
Diesel
Common in SUVs, pickups, vans and buses. Diesel engines pull well on long hill climbs and carry heavy loads comfortably, which is why the bigger vehicles for group and mountain trips are usually diesel.
Electric
Quiet, smooth and cheap to run, and well suited to Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and Chitwan, where chargers are available. Hill climbs use range faster than the spec sheet suggests, so plan charging stops. Our guide to renting an electric car in Nepal covers this in detail.

- City and short trips: petrol or electric
- Long highway days with a group or luggage: diesel SUV or van
- Remote or rough roads with few chargers: petrol or diesel
- Lower emissions and a quieter ride: electric, with charging planned
