Chitwan Safari Transfers: Getting to Sauraha by Private Car

Most Chitwan visits are built around resorts and guided safaris in Sauraha, the small town beside Chitwan National Park. Getting there and getting settled is straightforward once you know the timing.

From Kathmandu or Pokhara

Both journeys take around five to six hours by private car. Leave early so you arrive with time for a first afternoon activity, or check in and rest. Many resorts include pickup from the bus stand only; a private vehicle takes you directly to the door.

Timing your safari

Jeep safaris and canoe rides run in the morning and late afternoon, when animals are most active. Arriving by early afternoon gives you the best chance of fitting in an activity on day one.

What to pack

• Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, brown)
• Insect repellent and sun protection
• Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens
• A light rain jacket outside the dry season

The drive out

After the park, many travellers continue to Pokhara, Lumbini or back to Kathmandu. With a private car the onward journey can leave right after your morning activity.
